Jagmeet Singh is a Canadian politician who has become a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape. Born in Scarborough, Ontario in 1979, Singh’s family came from the state of Punjab in India. He grew up in a tight-knit community and was raised with strong values of equality and justice. Singh’s passion for activism and advocacy was evident from a young age, and eventually led him to pursue a career in law.
After earning his Bachelor of Laws from York University and his Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School, Singh began his legal career as a criminal defense lawyer. He quickly gained recognition for his ability to fight for the rights of marginalized communities, particularly those of South Asian descent. Singh’s dedication to social justice and his charismatic personality caught the attention of the New Democratic Party (NDP), a left-leaning political party in Canada.
In 2011, Singh decided to make the jump into politics and was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario. He quickly became known for his fiery speeches, bold fashion choices, and commitment to progressive policies. In 2017, Singh made history by becoming the first person of color to lead a major political party in Canada when he was elected as the leader of the NDP.
